Why is it that mechanics were quoting people differently for the same fix?

The study found that this was based on two primary factors:

1. The amount of research the consumer did before speaking with the mechanic; and

2. Gender. Women are more likely to be quoted a higher price than men.

For example: Women in this study were quoted an average price of $406, while their male counterparts received a quote of $383 for the same part.
